I recently had the honor and pleasure of photographing Juan Diaz at work.
This photo session was very special to me, because Juan is a dear friend of mine. We have worked weddings together, he has joined me on one of my annual speaking engagements at Clewiston Middle School, and he painted my son's bedroom, which is this insane master piece!
Juan was born in Bogotá, Colombia. He is the oldest child and only son of three children born to a closely-knit family. Juan’s father, also an artist was a professional sculptor and ceramist who graduated from Colombia’s National University with an emphasis in fine art, as well as an art professor at SENA (The National Service of Learning). During Juan’s childhood, his father recognized his son’s natural creative intelligence and artist gifts within the first five years of his life. In 1995 at age 13 Juan accompanied his father when he moved to the United States. Shortly thereafter, his mother and two sisters joined him and his father who were residing in Naples, Florida.
Since the late 1990‘s, Juan has used painting and drawing to explore and expose the complexities of life seeking freedom, respect and equality.
Juan was the recipient of Southwest Florida 2013 FACE Award for Culture & Arts awarded by Gulfshore Life Business Magazine and the 1999 Porter Goss Award. Diaz's style and early mastery in drawing and the use of oils earned him a range of awards for Best in Show and various scholarships.
Juan’s work has been included in major exhibitions at the Patty & Jay Baker Naples Museum of Art, Southwest Florida Museum of History, The Naples Depot Museum, Florida Gulf Coast University, City Gallery at Waterfront Park Charleston, Jonathan Green Art Collection, Alliance for the Arts and Art League of Marco Island. Diaz’s LIGHT Performance Art Series has been commission and treasured by the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida, The Naples Art Association at the Von Liebig Art Center, The Sidney & Berne Davies Art Center and the Naples Film Festival.
As you can see from Juan's bio, he has been blessed with an amazing talent and big heart.
